It’s an old adage, but if the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree then Mia Threapleton and Joe Anders are arguably within throwing distance of her Oscar-winning mother.

The promising young actors stars alongside mum Kate Winslet in the hard-hitting anthology series I Am…, about the rise of mental health issues among teenagers.

Threapleton, 23, has since won a BAFTA for her challenging performance as Freya, a girl whose life has been consumed by social media, and Winslet, 48 – a mother-of-three – admits working with her children feels like a natural progression.

Speaking to the latest edition of PORTER, she said: ‘Luckily, they’re good. It felt normal. These are kids who have been testing [me] on [my] lines pretty much since they could read.

‘They’ve seen me terrified beforehand. They’ve gone through it with me.’

Winslet plays the titular Ruth, a mother struggling to comprehend the destructive influence of social media on her young daughter, in a drama co-written by the actress with director Dominic Savage.

And she admits the response to what has become a worryingly relatable problem among teenagers has been unanimously positive.

She said: ‘The thing about going through something traumatic with a teenager is that it is completely automatic for any parent to feel like it is your fault.

‘So then this strange shame comes into play – and when the shame comes in, you shut down and you don’t discuss it or share it.

‘I wanted to tell a story that created a platform for people to just have a conversation. And that part of it has been overwhelming.’

The actress has since returned to the big screen as celebrated war photographer Lee Miller in the Ellen Kuras directed biopic, Lee.

Eight years in the making, the film was a labour of love for Winslet, who also served as co-producer and even helped fund salaries for the cast and crew during a two week delay in its funding.

‘There was just no giving up,’ she recalled. ‘What [Miller] stands for in representing truth and justice… [someone] who was powerful emotionally and charismatic and sexy and brilliantly skilled at her job and had a way of connecting with people – I am inspired by that.’

She added: ‘ What I took from her is that absolute freedom she has from her body and her delight in her own physical self.

‘I think that’s very unusual of historical female figures that we know of – and it’s very unusual of women today.’
